Sen. Talent Launches Web Petition Against Amnesty

Thursday, June 15, 2006

(ST. LOUIS) - U.S. Senator Jim Talent is asking Missourians to join him in saying “no” to amnesty for unlawful immigrants. Sen. Talent today launched a new online petition at http://www.talentforsenate.com/ that allows Missourians to express their views against amnesty and to show their support for border security.

“Sen. Talent has heard from thousands of Missourians who oppose amnesty and support border security,” said Sen. Talent campaign spokesman Rich Chrismer. “Sen. Talent agrees and we wanted to provide another way for Missourians to express their views against amnesty for illegal immigrants.”

Sen. Talent voted against the Senate amnesty bill because it would provide a pathway to citizenship for those who unlawfully entered the United States and those which provide citizenship for 70 to 90 million new immigrants over the next 20 years. The bill he opposed is estimated to cost taxpayers 54 billion dollars over the next 10 years.

Sen. Talent has introduced a bipartisan Border Security plan to help secure America’s borders with additional manpower, new barriers and high-tech surveillance equipment. Sen. Talent’s plan authorizes new funds for the acquisition of new technology to assist our Border Patrol, construct roads, fences and barriers along the border, and purchase air assets like helicopters His plan also increase resources for border detention centers and will enact stricter criminal penalties for human smuggling, falsifying work/entry documents and drug trafficking.

Sen. Talent and Claire McCaskill disagree on the issue of amnesty. Sen. Talent voted against amnesty and Claire McCaskill told the Columbia Daily Tribune on March 30 that she supports amnesty proposals. Sen. Talent and McCaskill also disagree on the need for a border security fence. Sen. Talent introduced a bipartisan plan to construct a border security fence and McCaskill opposes the idea.

Missourians can learn more about McCaskill’s amnesty plan at the Columbia Daily Tribune’s Website.

Sen. Talent is encouraging Missourians who share his views against amnesty and in support of border security to log on to www.talentforsenate.com.
