Jim Talent is a leader in the Senate in the fight against methamphetamine.
As co-chair of the Senate Anti-Meth Caucus, Sen. Talent is changing Washington to help Missouri law enforcement protect our neighborhoods from the meth epidemic by:
- Sponsoring the comprehensive Combat Meth Act, now law
- Championing anti-meth funding for law enforcement to lock-up meth cooks
- Supporting increased funding for meth treatment
- Co-sponsoring bipartisan legislation to prevent the importation of meth chemicals
Together with Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Jim Talent sponsored the Combat Meth Act. It's the strongest, most comprehensive anti-meth legislation ever introduced in the Congress.
The Combat Meth Act restricts the sale of cold medicines containing the precursor chemicals needed to cook meth by relocating these products behind the counter.
The federal legislation will prevent meth cooks from getting the ingredients they need to cook meth from states that have weak anti-meth laws or no restrictions on the sale of these products. The Combat Meth Act provides funding for local law enforcement for the fight against meth. It also closes a loophole in Missouri's state law by also requiring liquid and gel capsules containing meth ingredients to go behind the counter.
The President signed Sen. Talent's Combat Meth Act into law on March 9, 2006.
The Combat Meth Act is supported by the National District Attorneys Association; Fraternal Order of Police; National Attorney Generals Association; National Sheriffs' Association; National Narcotics Officers' Association; Association of State Criminal Investigative Agencies; National Alliance of State Drug Enforcement Agencies; National Association of Police Organizations; the Missouri State Highway Patrol; the St. Louis Police Officers' Association and dozens of Missouri law enforcement officials.
